American Airlines Narrows 24-Hour Refund Window To Week-Advance Trips

American Airlines narrowed its 24-hour refund policy so that, effective Wednesday, July 29, 2026, only tickets for flights at least seven days away qualify for an automatic 24-hour refund.[1]

Previously, American allowed 24-hour refunds for tickets on flights departing at least two days after booking.[1] The U.S. Department of Transportation requires airlines to offer either a 24-hour refund or a 24-hour free hold for tickets purchased at least seven days before departure.[1] The change brings American in line with JetBlue, Southwest and United, while Delta still offers 24-hour refunds without a seven-day departure requirement.[1]

Under American's prior rule, travelers could secure an automatic refund within 24 hours for bookings on flights two or more days out, a practice that had given some last-minute travelers extra flexibility.[1] Travelers should check each carrier's refund terms when they buy, because the seven-day rule reduces automatic short-notice refunds for trips under a week.
