U.S. Sanctions California-Born CJNG Leader And Dozens Of Alleged Aides

On Thursday, July 23, 2026, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Juan Carlos Gonzalez, a California-born leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, and more than 50 alleged associates and entities tied to the cartel.[1]

The State Department offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to Gonzalez's arrest or conviction in a U.S. drug-trafficking case in Washington.[1] Treasury said the sanctions target alleged cocaine-trafficking and fuel-smuggling networks and expand earlier actions and a 2026 bank alert meant to disrupt the cartel's finances.[1]

Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera was fatally wounded and captured in Jalisco in February 2026.[1] Treasury says Gonzalez, who was born September 12, 1984, in Santa Ana, California, became the CJNG's leader after El Mencho's capture.[1]

The sanctions package names more than 50 Mexican individuals and entities and seeks to choke off revenue streams that finance the cartel's operations.[1]
