State Department Warns R-1 Universities Over Funding From Foreign Watch-List Entities

The State Department warned 187 R-1 university boards on Wednesday that future federal grants could be withheld if schools accept money from foreign entities on U.S. government watch lists.[1]

Under Secretary Sarah B. Rogers sent the letters to the boards, saying the funding risked federal research support and urging universities to review donations and partnerships.[1]

CBS News found $27.6 million in foreign funds to U.S. universities in roughly the second half of last year from entities on at least one federal watch list.[1] A Chinese company that develops aeronautics for the People's Liberation Army gave more than $7 million total to three top American research universities.[1] Bryant University disclosed a $22.6 million, 50-year contract from Beijing Institute of Technology in 2020 under Section 117.[1]

The State and Education departments are now jointly scrutinizing foreign academic partnerships that officials say could threaten national security.[1]
