United Projects $6 Billion Surge In 2026 Jet Fuel Costs

United Airlines said on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 that it expects an additional $6 billion in jet fuel costs for the year based on July 14 crude prices.[1]

The company reported it spent an extra $2.3 billion on fuel in the second quarter, an 84% increase from a year earlier.[1] Delta Air Lines said it spent $4.4 billion on fuel in the second quarter, up 77% year-over-year, and indicated fares are unlikely to fall soon.[1]

The Argus U.S. Jet Fuel Index shows jet fuel peaked near $5 per gallon in April amid the U.S.-Iran war and was $3.64 on Tuesday, July 14.[1]

Higher fuel bills will squeeze airline profits and make it harder to cut fares in the months ahead as carriers consider hedging strategies and capacity changes.
