DOJ Uncovers Sophisticated San Diego Drug Tunnel, Seizes $45 Million In Cocaine

The Justice Department and federal agents discovered and dismantled a roughly 2,000-foot drug-smuggling tunnel running from Mexico into San Diego in early June 2026 and seized about $45 million in cocaine, officials said.[1]

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a June 6 television interview that the tunnel was "very sophisticated." Fox News He said the passage included a rail system and electricity and described it as traffickers' response to tighter border controls.[1]

The roughly 2,000-foot length combined with built-in rail and power systems suggests a higher level of engineering and investment than many previously reported tunnels. Federal officials say such sophistication can reflect traffickers adapting to increased enforcement along legal crossing points.

Blanche, the acting attorney general and President Trump's nominee for attorney general, discussed the seizure and the tunnel on television while praising agents involved in the operation.[1]
