Trump's Europe Troop Reversals Leave Pentagon With $32 Million Bill

The Pentagon says it has absorbed a $32 million bill after chartered shipments moved an armored brigade's equipment to Poland before a planned U.S. troop rotation was canceled in early May.[1]

A Pentagon memo in early May canceled the planned rotation of about 4,000 troops from the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood to Poland.[1] U.S. Transportation Command says it spent $32 million to move the incoming brigade's equipment by chartered ship from Texas to Poland before the deployment was halted.[1]

On the day the cancellation became official, President Trump posted that he would send 5,000 U.S. troops to Poland, forcing planners to rework deployments.[1] About 1,000 soldiers who deployed early to Poland remain unsure whether and when they will return, and others were stopped from boarding flights at the last minute.[1] Pentagon officials now say they are assuming the 5,000-troop order will be filled by units already in Europe rather than by new deployments from the United States.[1]
