Poland, Lithuania Confirm Talks On Expanded Role In NATO Nuclear Posture

On June 3, 2026, Poland and Lithuania confirmed talks about playing a larger role in NATO's nuclear deterrent, while denying plans to host U.S. warheads now.[1]

Poland's deputy defense minister confirmed the discussions but said Warsaw currently has no plans to host nuclear warheads.[1] Lithuania's defense minister said the conversations are classified and that Lithuania is not 'standing on the sidelines' of potential NATO nuclear-posture changes.[1]

NATO and U.S. officials have been working for years to assess and potentially adapt NATO's nuclear posture in response to Russia, separate from any U.S. conventional drawdown.[1]

Financial Times reporting cited by officials says Poland and the Baltic states are interested in hosting bases for U.S. dual-capable aircraft as part of NATO nuclear sharing.[1] Officials said any further changes would be subject to assessments inside NATO and by U.S. authorities.[1]
