Hazardous blue-green algae advisory at Lake Nokomis

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board issued a hazardous blue-green algae advisory Wednesday for Lake Nokomis' Main Beach and 50th Street Beach, warning people and pets to stay out of the water.[1]

Water samples this week showed microcystin levels above the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's safe-swimming standard.[1] Officials told people to avoid algae scum, keep pets away, clean fish with tap or bottled water, and shower immediately after any exposure.[1]

Microcystin is a toxin produced by cyanobacteria, commonly called blue-green algae, and can cause skin irritation, stomach illness, and other health problems in people and pets.
