January St. Paul assault now ruled 6th homicide of 2026

St. Paul police now count the January 30 assault of 66-year-old Thomas Stockstill as the city's sixth homicide after Stockstill died on May 2.[1]

The assault happened around 4:30 p.m. on the 1500 block of Marion Street in St. Paul.[1] Police say 22-year-old James Sprowls, who called 911, admitted punching Stockstill; he was charged with first-degree assault, has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.[1]

Stockstill remained unconscious at Regions Hospital until his death on May 2, and the death led police to add the case to this year's homicide count.[1]
