Walz signs package on fraud, schools, cannabis, security
Gov. Tim Walz signed nine bills on Tuesday and 14 on Wednesday as the 2026 legislative session ended in St. Paul.[1]
The package includes SF 3432, which boosts Minnesota State Capitol security, creates a Security Services Task Force, and establishes a database of elected officials' emergency contact information.[1] SF 4401 streamlines medical and adult-use cannabis supply chains and directs the Office of Cannabis Management to study a potential therapeutic psilocybin program.[1] HF 3900 puts a constitutional amendment on the ballot to increase distributions from the Permanent School Fund to all districts without raising income or property taxes, and it would take effect July 1, 2027 if voters approve it.[1] HF 4252 funds the Fostering Independence Grant Program, expands protections and academic accommodations for pregnant and parenting students, and tightens fraud prevention in state financial aid by requiring identity verification at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.[1] HF 2433 funds school safety efforts, including a statewide anonymous threat reporting system, and creates a compensatory revenue hold harmless to protect districts from drops in compensatory aid.[1]
Lawmakers passed the measures during the final floor votes of the 2026 session in St. Paul before sending them to Walz for his signature.[1] Many of the bills reflect long-running legislative priorities on school funding and safety, campus fraud prevention, Capitol security, and changes to cannabis policy.
Walz's signatures complete executive action on the measures for now, while the constitutional amendment will require voter approval to become law.
