MPCA issues Friday ozone air alert for Twin Cities

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued an ozone air quality alert for the Twin Cities for Friday from noon to 9 p.m., warning ground-level ozone will reach unhealthy levels.[1]

The agency said people with lung disease, children, teens and anyone doing heavy outdoor activity are most at risk.[1] MPCA urged residents to limit strenuous outdoor activity and to cut emissions by carpooling, using transit, fueling vehicles at dawn or dusk and avoiding backyard fires.[1]

Sun, heat and low humidity are expected to drive the ozone spike, according to MPCA forecasts.[1] Ozone forms when sunlight reacts with vehicle and industrial emissions, and it can irritate the lungs, reduce lung function and worsen asthma and other respiratory conditions.

The alert covers the midday and evening hours when ozone typically peaks, so people planning outdoor exercise should move it indoors or reschedule.[1]
