Texas DPS Stop Finds 20 Migrants In Semi-Truck; Second Smuggling Case Detailed

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers stopped a Volvo semi-truck in Webb County on May 18, 2026, and discovered 20 migrants crammed into the truck's sleeper cab; the driver fled but was arrested.[1]

DPS identified the driver as 25-year-old Mexican national Miguel Angel Velazquez Chavez and said he was charged with evading arrest and smuggling persons.[1] DPS said four of the 20 migrants were minors from Mexico and Guatemala and that the rest had been squeezed into the sleeper area.[1] In a separate Maverick County case, troopers used a PIT maneuver to stop a high-speed chase of a vehicle driven by Cuban national Yoisdelvis Nunez Acosta, who fled into brush but was quickly caught.[1] American national Alexander Rodriguez Acosta was also arrested, and both men were charged with six counts of smuggling persons while six migrants from Mexico and Vietnam were referred to U.S. Border Patrol.[1]

The May 18 traffic stop occurred along what DPS described as a well-known human-smuggling route near the southern border.[1] Video from the stop shows migrants jammed into the truck's sleeper area.[2]
