California Manhunt For Armed Samurai Sword Attack Suspect Underway

A manhunt is under way after a suspect allegedly attacked another person with a samurai-style sword Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Creekside Apartments in Mariposa, California.[1]

Sheriff Jeremy Briese identified the suspect as Jonathan Bays, saying Bays allegedly struck the victim multiple times before fleeing on foot.[1] The victim was airlifted to a hospital, and authorities launched a multi-agency search that includes helicopters and K-9 teams.[1]

Bays is a transient from Idaho and has an active 2025 parole warrant and a prior conviction for sexual battery of a minor, authorities said.[1]
