Allina, Sutter sign merger deal with $2B local investment

Allina Health and Sutter Health have signed a definitive merger agreement to form a multistate nonprofit health system and pledged more than $2 billion in local investment for Minnesota and western Wisconsin.[1]

The companies say the combined organization would include 40 hospitals, more than 400 care sites, about 18,000 aligned physicians, roughly 88,000 employees and over 5 million patients across California, Minnesota and Wisconsin.[1] Warner Thomas will be chief executive of the combined system, while Lisa Shannon will continue to lead Allina and Allina will keep its name and Minneapolis headquarters.[1]

Allina will become Sutter's Upper Midwest Division under the agreement, a structure the companies say preserves local identity while integrating operations.[1] Sutter and Allina said the planned more-than-$2 billion, five-year investment will expand care sites, deploy AI and other digital tools, and recruit clinicians in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.[1]

The deal now enters state and federal regulatory review and is expected to close by the end of 2026 if regulators sign off.[1]
