United Flight Diverts To Dulles After Passenger Tries To Open Door

United Airlines Flight 1551 diverted to Washington Dulles after a passenger tried to open a cabin door and assaulted another traveler, forcing an emergency landing Thursday, May 21.[1]

The pilot reported the unruly passenger tried to open door 2L at about 36,000 feet before assaulting another passenger.[1] The Boeing 737 Max 8 was carrying 145 passengers and six crew and touched down at Dulles at 8:38 p.m.; no injuries were reported and the FBI responded.[1]

Flight 1551 had been en route from Newark to Guatemala City when crews diverted to Dulles.[1] United canceled the original flight, scheduled a replacement for Friday and provided overnight accommodations for affected customers.[1]
