SDNY Filing Links Bahamas Politician To Suspected Trafficker In Florida Plane Crash

A court filing in the U.S. Southern District of New York ties a high-ranking Bahamian politician to a suspected drug trafficker rescued after a May 13 plane crash off Florida, court papers say.[1]

The filing and a DEA agent's deposition say roughly $30,000 was found in a bag labeled with the politician's name and that 11 people, including the suspected trafficker, were rescued from the crash.[1] The court papers say the suspect met the politician at the Bahamian Parliament in October 2024 to arrange a 1,000-kilogram cocaine shipment and official protection.[1]

A DEA deposition filed in the SDNY case says investigators believe multiple trafficking groups have moved tons of cocaine through the Bahamas to the United States with help from corrupt local officials.[1] The Bahamian government announced it will open its own inquiry and request information and evidence from U.S. authorities.[1]
