DHS Faults California Sanctuary Policy After ICE Rearrests Fresno Hit-And-Run Suspect

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement rearrested Fresno hit-and-run suspect Aman Kumar on May 13, 2026, and the Department of Homeland Security blamed California's sanctuary policies for his earlier jail release.[1]

Kumar was originally arrested and charged last month in Fresno with felony hit-and-run causing death or injury after investigators say his vehicle struck a 4-year-old boy.[1] Investigators say Kumar drove around stopped cars using a bike lane before striking the child, who was later listed in critical but stable condition.[1]

DHS said Kumar entered the United States illegally in 2023 and that California's refusal to honor ICE detainers led to 4,561 releases of undocumented immigrants with criminal charges or convictions since Jan. 20.[1] An earlier ICE letter from Director Todd Lyons urged California Attorney General Rob Bonta to honor detainers for more than 33,000 undocumented immigrants in custody.[1]
