Tornadoes And Wildfires Batter Central U.S., Destroy Homes And Spur Evacuations

Tornadoes and wildfires swept across the central United States over the weekend, destroying homes and forcing evacuations from Colorado through the Plains into Minnesota.

At least 22 tornado reports were logged across five states from Kansas to Minnesota over the weekend. A tornado in Howard County, Nebraska, leveled a family's newly built house.[1] The family had sheltered in the basement and escaped; the homeowner called it "the most terrifying thing I've experienced." The Sharpe Fire in southeastern Colorado has burned more than 16,000 acres and forced evacuations as of Sunday. In northern Minnesota, multiple wildfires prompted the governor to declare a state of emergency.

Evacuations remained in effect in several communities while crews worked to contain blazes and assess storm damage across the region.
