Sandy Fire Near Simi Valley Forces 17,000 Evacuations, Still Uncontained

As of Tuesday morning, May 19, 2026, more than 17,000 people in Simi Valley were under evacuation orders as the fast-moving Sandy Fire burned nearby and remained uncontained.[1]

Ventura County said the fire had burned more than two square miles of dry brush and destroyed at least one home.[1] About 500 firefighters were battling the blaze Monday evening.[2] Crews said calmer overnight winds allowed "a lot of progress," though containment remained at zero.[1] Ventura County spokesperson Andrew Dowd said crews hoped to make further progress before winds increased and that the fire's cause remains under investigation.[1]

CBS reported Monday that the fast-moving wildfire, about 40 miles north of Los Angeles, was forcing evacuations in parts of Simi Valley.[3] Early reports put the burned area at about 184 acres.[4] By Monday evening, CBS said the fire had scorched at least 720 acres.[2]

Coverage shifted as officials updated the scale and impact of the blaze. PBS on Tuesday reported the larger evacuation total and that orders and warnings remained in place for several Simi Valley neighborhoods.[1] Officials urged residents to follow evacuation orders and stay clear so crews can work to contain the fire.
