Bronx Man Convicted Of Running Secret Chinese Police Station In Manhattan
A federal jury on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, convicted Bronx resident Lu Jianwang of acting as an illegal agent of China and of obstructing justice for running a covert Chinese police outpost in Lower Manhattan.[1]
Prosecutors said Lu helped set up a "Fuzhou Police Overseas Service Station" in a Lower Manhattan office in 2022 that answered to China's Ministry of Public Security.[1] The FBI searched the outpost in October 2022 and seized phones belonging to Lu and co-defendant Chen Jinping, and later found deleted WeChat messages with a Chinese handler.[1] The Justice Department said Lu collected information on Chinese dissidents in the U.S., including helping to locate a pro-democracy activist who had fled China.[1]
Co-defendant Chen Jinping pleaded guilty in 2024 to conspiring to act as an agent of the People's Republic of China.[1] Prosecutors say the deleted messages and the seizure of phones were part of an effort to conceal ties to Chinese handlers and to monitor dissidents in the United States.[1]
