FBI Reports 2025 Murders Fell Over 18 Percent Nationwide

On Thursday, May 14, 2026, the FBI released a preliminary report saying U.S. homicides fell more than 18% from 2024 to 2025 nationwide.[1]

Robberies fell an estimated 18.5%, while rapes and aggravated assaults each dropped about 7% in 2025.[1] Property crime declined an estimated 12.4% nationwide, the agency said, based on submissions from roughly 17,075 law enforcement agencies covering nearly 96% of the U.S. population.[1]

The FBI labeled the release "First Look: 2025 Crime Data" and described it as preliminary.[1] The agency said the overall decline in homicides and violent crime marked the largest such drop since 1937.[1]

Fifty-three law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in 2025, down from 64 in 2024, the report said.[1]
