Mexico Detains Northeast Cartel Cell Leader, Seizes Drugs, Guns And Tigers

Mexican authorities announced the detention of José Antonio Cortes Huerta, 39, identified as a leader of a Northeast Cartel cell in Nuevo León on Monday, May 11, 2026.[1]

Officials said the arrest followed an investigation that began after authorities seized a boat in Tamaulipas near the U.S. border.[1]

Authorities reported the operation yielded unidentified narcotics, cash, 10 guns, 11 vehicles, six motorcycles and seven tigers.[1] Those animals were linked by officials to alleged fuel smuggler Roberto Blanco Cantu.[1]

The Northeast Cartel was designated a foreign terrorist organization by the Trump administration in 2025 and has been targeted by recent U.S. Treasury sanctions.[1]
