EU Sanctions 16 Russians, 7 Centers Over Ukrainian Child Abductions

The European Union on Monday, May 11, 2026, imposed sanctions on 16 Russian officials and seven centers tied to the abduction of thousands of Ukrainian children.[1]

The measures include travel bans and asset freezes, bringing to more than 130 the people and entities now targeted by EU actions over the deportations.[1] EU officials say about 20,500 Ukrainian children have been unlawfully deported or transferred since 2022, and around 2,200 have been returned.[1] The sanctions singled out camp heads, government representatives and military officers whom the EU accuses of indoctrination and militarized education programs for the children.[1] The EU and Canada convened a 47-country coalition the same day to coordinate efforts to locate and repatriate the children.[1]

Since 2022, EU officials have documented the transfers and say the scale prompted the new sanctions.[1]

Officials said the measures aim to pressure Moscow and to disrupt the institutional networks handling the transfers, while allied states coordinate repatriation efforts.[1]
