Ramsey house fire spreads into nearby swamp

A home on 157th Lane NW in Ramsey was heavily damaged by fire Sunday afternoon, and flames spread from the house into a swampy area south of the property.

A vehicle at the property also appears to have burned. The house fire ignited a brush fire in the adjacent swampy grass. Eleven agencies responded, including Ramsey, Anoka-Champlin, Andover, Elk River, Nowthen, Oak Grove, Rum River, Coon Rapids, SBM and East Bethel fire departments and Minnesota DNR ground and air units. No injuries were reported.

The episode traces back to weeks of dry, windy weather and state Red Flag Warnings issued in late March and April that prompted spring burning restrictions in Anoka County.

Historically, about 75% of Minnesota wildfires occur in April and May after snowmelt, when dry vegetation can carry flames fast across grass and into swamp. Officials had warned that fires can spread rapidly in grassy or swampy terrain.
