Study Links 988 Hotline To 11 Percent Drop In Youth Suicides

A new study linked the nationwide 988 suicide and crisis hotline's July 2022 launch to an 11 percent drop in suicides among U.S. youth, cutting an estimated 4,372 deaths, researchers reported.

The analysis compared observed deaths with projected totals and found youth suicides were 11 percent lower than expected after the rollout. The analysis called the decline meaningful, and clinicians involved urged more funding to expand crisis services.

The episode traces back to a long rise in youth suicides, which climbed 62 percent among ages 10 to 24 from 2007 through 2021 and pushed lawmakers to seek an easier-to-dial lifeline. Congress designated 988 in 2020, the FCC set rules in July 2020, and telecoms were required to route calls by the July 16, 2022 launch, which received federal support to grow crisis-center capacity.

Usage has climbed, with the 988 Lifeline handling over 14 million contacts by its third anniversary in 2025, while many states still lack permanent funding and consider telecom fees to sustain services. Public reaction ranged from praise for lives saved to calls for deeper prevention that addresses family and school breakdowns.
