Trump-Endorsed Sydney Gruters Launches Campaign for Open Florida House Seat

Sydney Gruters, former district director to Reps. Vern Buchanan and Greg Steube and wife of Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters, has formally entered the race for Florida’s open 16th Congressional District seat after President Donald Trump urged her to run and issued a March 24 social media endorsement. Gruters, a 44-year-old mother of three, framed her bid around inflation, housing and insurance costs in Southwest Florida, pledging to "protect our conservative values" and give the district a strong voice in Washington. The right-leaning district, stretching from Tampa’s eastern suburbs to Bradenton, is being vacated by veteran GOP Rep. Vern Buchanan and gave Trump 57% of the vote in 2024, making the GOP primary effectively decisive even as Republicans hold only a 218-214 House majority nationally. Gruters previously served as Buchanan’s operations director, as district director to Steube, and as Florida and U.S. Virgin Islands state director at USDA in Trump’s first administration, and most recently led advancement and the foundation at New College of Florida after Gov. Ron DeSantis’ conservative takeover of the school. She enters a crowded field of at least three other Republicans and three Democrats, but Trump’s "Complete and Total Endorsement" and backing from Maggie’s List position her as an early front-runner as national Republicans look to lock down safe seats while fighting to preserve their slim House control.
