UN rights rapporteur urges U.S. lift Cuba sanctions

UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan, speaking in Havana on Nov. 21, urged the United States to lift sanctions on Cuba, saying the measures are harming the island’s entire population, including access to health care, nutrition and education. Citing worsening conditions since her 2023 visit and that 69% of necessary medicines are unavailable, she linked the deterioration to stricter U.S. measures, as the UN General Assembly last month again condemned the U.S. embargo.
