TSA proposes $18 biometric ID alternative

The TSA announced a proposed alternative identity‑verification program that would allow travelers without a Real ID or passport to pass airport security after paying an $18 fee and completing a biometric kiosk check, according to a Federal Register notice. The option would be valid for 10 days, may involve additional screening, and does not guarantee passage beyond the checkpoint; timing for implementation is not yet specified. The change would apply nationwide, including at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), as Real ID enforcement began May 7, 2025.
