Eight hurt in shooting at Lake Street encampment
Just after 10 p.m. Monday, a shootout between at least two people at a homeless encampment near 28th Ave. S. and E. Lake St. in Minneapolis wounded eight people (five men, three women), four critically, and sparked tent fires; no arrests were reported. Police Chief Brian O’Hara linked the violence to fentanyl use and drug-distribution disputes and declared the site and a nearby location a public-safety emergency, as the city increased patrols, erected fencing, and kept the encampment under police control pending a Sept. 17 TRO hearing, with Mayor Jacob Frey saying the city is prepared to defend the action in court.
